2nd China (Macao) High-quality Consumption Exhibition & Hengqin Global Bay Areas Forum opens

This week, the annual Central Economic Work Conference was held in Beijing, setting the tone for economic work in 2024. Priorities like expanding domestic demand and high-level opening-up are highlighted.

The 2nd China (Macao) High-quality Consumption Exhibition & Hengqin Global Bay Areas Forum is one vivid example to pursue such goals. The event is both held in Hengqin and Macao SAR. One major idea the forum calls for is deeper integrated development between Macao SAR and Guangdong to further promote high-level opening-up.

And within the same week, the State Council has made it clear that more powerful measures will be taken to promote in-depth cooperation between Macao and Guangdong. The importance of such forum has been brought to national level.

The place where the forum is held already sends a clear message: the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone, a master development plan for the Greater Bay Area. It’s designed to foster closer economic ties and promote cooperation between the two regions.

Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone attracts businesses

It has proved to be quite successful. As of the first three quarters of this year, more than 57,000 commercial entities have registered in the Cooperation Zone. Over 16,000 are technology companies. Macao-funded enterprises in the zone are on the rise, with nearly 6000 registered here. This is encouraged by a series of support measures including subsidies for rent, talents, R&D and setting up brands in the area.

This is not just about the zone itself. Last month, the SAR has unveiled its first development plan for economic diversification, aiming to up its non-gaming industries to 60% of GDP by 2028. By assembling "high-quality enterprises" from the mainland, the economic zone serves as a platform for Macao SAR to better diversify its gaming centric economy into industries like healthcare, modern finance, new technology, conventions and tourism.

The Greater Bay Area shows potentials for quality consumption growth

The other theme the forum focuses on is high quality consumption. The Greater Bay Area is witnessing a change of consumption patterns, which creates huge demand for high quality products and services. The 90-million population, the industrial clusters and higher residents' income have made it a perfect spot to cultivate and expand new consumption.

This goes way beyond the forum, Macao and Hengqin, and even the Greater Bay Area. The potentials the region shows are a strong implementation of national economic planning, injecting new and strong vitality into China's path to modernization.
