July 1st this year marks the 27th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China. With decades of rapid development, Hong Kong has metamorphosed into one of the leading international financial centers and a global cultural hub, where a wide assortment of mega events are taking off. In early 2024, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced a slew of measures with a view to building Hong Kong into an “events capital” in the world. More than 80 mega-events in a variety of themes and genres will be staged in Hong Kong in the first half of this year, including the world-renowned Art Basel, the Asian debut of the international pop-culture festival ComplexCon, and the much-anticipated 15th National Games, all injecting fresh vitality into the region and beyond.

According to the calendar of mega events in Hong Kong (second half of 2024) released in May, at least 210 mega events will be held throughout the year. It’s estimated that approximately 1.7 million tourists would take part in these events, during which a total consumption of around HK$7.2 billion would be generated, bringing value-added of about HK$4.3 billion to the Hong Kong economy.

From world-class theme parks to heritage architecture, iconic landmarks to fascinating Chinese temples, Hong Kong is an eclectic city with its unique East-meets-West culture, where it blends the old and the new, urban and nature, activity and relaxation in compelling ways. This cultural integration not only provides fertile soil for its mega events economy to thrive, but also presents tourists around the globe with a one-of-a-kind exhilarating adventure.

The robust growth of Hong Kong’s mega events economy speaks volume for its exceptional inclusiveness and diversity. This burgeoning sector also heralds a new stage of Hong Kong’s development where the city would sparkle with even more exuberant growth momentum and continue to amaze the world with its infinite possibilities.
