Guangdong Meets Akihabara: Chinese IPs Spark a New Creative Wave｜SFC Markets and Finance

As one of China’s major hubs for the animation industry, Guangdong is bringing its creativity to the global stage. Recently, the New Dimensions of Guangdong Animation and Trendy Toys Exhibition was held in Tokyo’s Akihabara, where Guangdong showcased its original IPs and creative works, drawing large crowds and wide attention.

In this cultural dialogue between China and Japan, the fusion of Eastern narratives and aesthetics became a highlight. Japanese documentary director Ryo Takeuchi told Southern Finance reporters that Dongguan used to mainly manufacture products for international IPs under contract, but is now creating original ones — “and that’s where its real strength lies,” he said, adding that he looks forward to more Chinese IPs emerging.

Mitsugu Sekiguchi, former Sanrio Creative Design Director, said such exchanges between the two industries are crucial. He noted that China has advanced rapidly in 3D animation, while Japan excels in 2D — “combining the two could open up exciting new possibilities.”

A foreign visitor also shared her impression, saying she was first an anime fan, but later became fascinated by Chinese works such as The Monkey King and Cinderella Chef for their vibrant colors, storytelling, and unique cultural touch.

From the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to Tokyo Bay, this cultural route is taking shape — and as China and Japan deepen collaboration, Asian creativity is poised to shine brighter on the global stage.
