“Dear You” Arrives in Thailand: How Tales of Qiaopi Letters Hit the Heart of Overseas Chinese
On July 21, the Thai premiere of Dear You: Love Letter to Grandma took place in Bangkok, sparking eager anticipation among the local Thai-Chinese community ahead of its official theatrical release on August 6.
Before entering the theater at CentralWorld’s SF World Cinema, moviegoers explored a special exhibition showcasing the history of Teochew immigrants—from their initial migration to settling in Thailand—through historical records and artifacts.
Following the screening, many viewers were deeply moved by the film. In this video report, audience members share nostalgic memories passed down from their grandparents, recalling perilous journeys aboard "Red-headed Ships" with little more than a straw mat and pillow. Others reminisce about the emotion of receiving their very first qiaopi (remittance letter) during Chinese New Year.
Now playing in Thai cinemas, Dear You: Love Letter to Grandma offers a heartwarming story that transcends audiences into a shared experience of Teochew migrants’ lives and enduring family bonds of early Chinese overseas.
